Dems Looking To Codify Hyde Amendment For Health Bill

By Ian Kelly

As many of you know we are not against Health Care Reform BUT we cannot in good conscience support legislation that would use taxpayer money to fund abortions. So we have been praying that abortion would be driven like a wedge into this national debate. And with over 50 percent of Americans identifying themselves as pro-life, momentum is on our side.

We applaud House Reps. like Bart Stupack (D-MI) who has stood his ground in demanding that current health care legislation include something like the Hyde amendment so as to bar federal funds from paying for abortions. But Stupack's demand has been met with resistance, to say the least.

With that being said here is some good news, and I believe, an answer to our payers:

House health legislation will ultimately include provisions barring public funding for abortions, a key Democratic leader maintained Wednesday.

Democrats are looking at adopting language similar to the Hyde amendment, which barred using federal funds for abortions, in health care reform legislation to placate pro-life Democrats, who have threatened to withhold support for the package unless it included such prohibitions.

"We're working very closely with Bart Stupak (D-MIch.) and that coalition of Democrats to write a the bill in a way that makes it absolutely clear that no public dollars can go to funding abortions as part of the health reform bill," Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), the assistant to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), said during an appearance on Fox News this morning.

"We're trying to codify the Hyde amendment as part of the health care reform bill," Van Hollen explained.

This is huge news! Keep praying. Take action.

Contact Bart Stupak and encourage him. Make sure to thank him for taking a stand.

Contact Chris Van Hollen and encourage him to continue to work to codify the Hyde amendment as part of the health care reform bill.
