"This Is A Health Care Bill, Not An Abortion Bill"

By Ian Kelly

President Obama tells Jake Tapper that Congress needs to change abortion-related language in the health care bill passed by the House of Representatives this weekend.

"I laid out a very simple principle, which is this is a health care bill, not an abortion bill," Obama said. "And we're not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions.

What the President is getting at is that the Stupak amendment went to far in preventing taxpayer funded abortions. Basically, that "very simple principle" is a bit tricky.

President Obama told Congress and the American people that abortion would not be funded with taxpayer money. But despite that promise Healthcare legislation prior to the Stupak amendment provided for abortions. And now we are here again with the same spin: Current law (Hyde Amendment) prohibits taxpayer funded abortion.

That line of thinking was flawed two months ago, two weeks ago and today.

Of course, why take a crazy pro-lifers word for it, right? Well don't worry - you don have to. FactCheck.org agreed that Healthcare Reform Legislation did (past tense) provide for abortion. And the AP admitted that the Capps amendment "would allow the public plan to cover abortion" with "dollars from beneficiary premiums." It added, "Likewise, private plans in the new insurance exchange could opt to cover abortion."

The House's legislation would have used taxpayer money to cover abortions. Period.

If the President insists on lobbying Congress to throw out pro-life amendments under the guise of, Hyde will cover will do the trick, then we must continue to work just as hard as ever to tell the truth and hold are Reps., and now Senators, accountable to the truth.

Lets not dial down the pressure! Call your Reps. and thank him or her for taking a stand for life (If they voted for the Stupak amendment). And call your Senators asking them to uphold prohibitions on taxpayer funded abortions.
