Before The Throne

By Susan Tyrrell

Obviously, the phrase itself isn’t the problem; it’s when it’s used for absolution, not action.

God is on the throne. God uses His people to carry out His work. These facts are not mutually exclusive. Throughout the Bible, we see God telling His people to petition Him to move to solve a problem. The oft-quoted corporate prayer verse, II Chronicles 7:14, actually is nestled between two verses we don’t hear so much:

"If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. "Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place. (II Chronicles 7:13-15)

Even if the Lord Himself causes calamity on the land because of people’s sin, He will turn at the sound of prayers. The same thing happened in Nineveh.

Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them… "Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning anger so that we will not perish." When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it. (Jonah 3:5, 9-10)

Time and again people tell me, “Well, God’s on the throne so it’ll all be okay” or “It’ll work out because God is in control.” These statements, without us doing our part, are actually an invitation to disaster. In telling us to cry out to God, the prophet Joel says, “Who knows whether He will not turn and relent” (Joel 2:14). And then he admonishes us to “Blow a trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly” (v. 15), and essentially have a massive sobering gathering of intercession, suspending our “fun” for a bit to petition Heaven.

God is certainly on the throne. That statement is as true as can be. And it’s because He is that when we go to Him, it moves things on earth. If Jesus Himself “lives to make intercession” (Heb. 7:25), to follow Him is to do likewise.

The fact that God is on the throne is what makes our intercession more than wishful thinking or ungrounded hope. It’s our confidence He will hear us and answer. But it’s never a reason not to pray.

There exists no absolution from intercession if we want action. While it’s not necessarily logical to our human nature that God will act because we pray, and may not act if we don’t, it’s the way He has established His kingdom. Certainly there are other things we do, as well, but skipping intercession makes the rest of what we do to end abortion the same social justice system that Satan is counterfeiting.

I like this post. We have to learn to lean into Sovereignty without rejecting our calls as intercessors.

Amen Amen Amen! What’s happening in Haiti is a vivid example of the opportunity for prayer/intercession. God is on His throne, and things WILL happen there. But MORE will happen, more of His purposes will be accomplished, more angels will be dispatched, more demons will be pushed back…if we pray. Truly the prayer meeting, whatever the size, is the governmental center of the universe.
And not just for Haiti. The same is true for every circumstance or situation in the earth.

I have to afree with Ian. We have to understand that even though we may claim all these things about God being in control, we need to ourselfs understand that WE NEED TO DO OUR PART.
Our generation needs to step up. Do their part in the secret place, prayer, fasting as a lifestyle, and in corporate as well.

Hello! I serve as a missionary for life and eternity in Orlando, Fl. I serve outside a notorious abortion clinic that kills through all 9 months of pregnancy. In fact, I was there this morning..Wed is late term killing day, but 1st trimester abortions are performed as well. They kill 7 days a week at this clinic and offer a couple different times on Wednesdays.
I certainly understand the scriptural mandate to fast and pray..there’s no doubt we are in desperate need of a spiritual awakening/revival in the US. We certainly need to repent in sack cloth and ashes. Do you have some in your ministry that don’t cover their mouths, so they may move or speak as the Lord may lead when outside abortion clinics? You see, those are the frountlines of battle and if you minister/pray there while women are aborting, you will have the opportunity to be like Jonah and call men and women to repentance in addtion to offering to walk them through their pregnancies if they choose to obey God and turn away. The scripture you listed from Jonah occurred after Jonah was used by God to call the Ninevites to repentance. We need to be careful to pray without ceasing, but also be available as a vocal tool of the Lord if He so leads and directs. Women will talk with you and I have seen God’s Spirit soften the hearts of many women over the years…I think the most ideal plan is to have prayer warriors and others available to speak with men and women at the clinic b/c you never know how God is moving within their hearts. Also, the Bible teaches us that faith comes by hearing, so it is necessary to share the Gospel of Life and shine His light into the darkness. The spoken Word of Christ, sacraficial offers to help women through their pregnancies and prayers/fasting/petitions before God should all work in unisom.

Amen amen thank you Susan every time i read your blogs my heart is stired. More & more I have realized that even our short prayers that we send up though out the day are jsut as important as our time set aside to stand in the gap.
Both are so very important…like Jaleesa said “lifestyle” is the key we just can’t belive it we need to walk it out daily.

The power of prayer is beyond my understanding. Calling out to God in prayer does make a difference in our requests I see the answers given to me by God and I have seen the answer that we should wait for Gods timing. I truely believe that there will be an end to the nations sufferings if we all pray together and cry out to our Lord
