Super Bowl Ads: Let’s Stick To Beer & Leave Life Out Of This.

By Kaitlin Martinez

Sunday is the Super Bowl and by now you know that the celebrated quarterback for the University of Florida, Tim Tebow, will be starring in a pro-life ad during the game. If you haven’t heard Tim’s story yet it goes a little something like this: his mom, Pam, was a missionary in the Philippines when she got pregnant with Tim, she got a severe infection, the doctors used medicine to treat her and in the process they determined that Tim would be a stillbirth and recommended that Pam have an abortion to protect her own life. She, obviously, denied the abortion and went on to give birth to one of the best college football players of all time. Pretty amazing story, huh? You’d think everybody would love to hear it, right? WRONG. As it turns out, not everyone wants to hear this story.

In fact I found out that a lot of people would rather this commercial never air. I was on facebook and I saw one of my Christian friends had commented on how wasteful and shameful it was for Focus on the Family, the group behind the ad, to be spending 2.5 million dollars on a commercial when so many people were suffering in Haiti. Now, I believe that we need to come to the aid of those in need but I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to say that giving money to other causes impedes upon the compassion and support we give to the Haitians. I mean, during the Super Bowl corporations will spend millions of dollars on commercials to get us to buy their beer or underwear or car insurance or whatever. Therefore isn’t it fitting to, in the midst of all the shameless advertising, air an ad on behalf of those who have no voice? Wouldn’t you agree these unborn children are worth more than a beer commercial?

The other group of people I found out didn’t want the commercial aired were those who stand for, you guessed it, CHOICE. Several abortion rights groups are outraged that CBS would dare play this “controversial” commercial. They claim that Pam Tebow was lucky to have a “choice”. Choice, choice, choice…it’s all about choice. Except if your CHOICE is to be pro-life, then your choice is uneducated, sexist and intolerant. Let’s face it, this commercial isn’t going to change legislation and it doesn’t outlaw abortion. So what’s the big deal? The big deal is they don’t want people to have a choice all at. Oh and did I mention that most of these groups were created with the intention of supporting and empowering women? In this case CBS is the one championing a woman’s right to speak her mind while the pro-choice, pro-women groups are doing everything they can to silence her. How does that make sense?

To CBS and the Tebow’s I commend you for promoting life.

Will you be watching for this ad this Sunday? Do you want to see this ad? Sound off in the comments.
