Planned Parenthood Opens New Supercenter In Oregon

By Ian Kelly

On Valentine's Day, Planned Parenthood opened another of its abortion supercenters in Portland, Oregon. It is Oregon’s largest abortion center, as well as one of the largest in the nation.

Oregon Right To Life released a statement about the opening of this facility:

Despite Planned Parenthood’s attempts to downplay its focus on abortion, the organization’s 2007‐2008 national annual report reveals its commitment to its abortion business. Abortions performed at Planned Parenthood clinics around the nation increased 5.3% over the previous year, totaling 305,310 abortions, approximately 25% of all abortions done in the United States. Abortions at Planned Parenthood clinics have nearly doubled in the past 10 years, while at the same time total abortions have dropped nearly every year.

In November 2009, Abby Johnson, director of Planned Parenthood’s clinic in Byran, Texas, quit after viewing an abortion through ultrasound. She said that it had been bothering her that clinic directors were instructed to increase the number of abortions performed.

"It’s a very lucrative business and that’s why they want to increase numbers," said Ms. Johnson. Planned Parenthood’s national income, including federal grants, grew last year to over one billion dollars. Planned Parenthood in Oregon contracts with the Oregon Health Plan for abortions performed."

"Despite its humanitarian‐sounding talk and non‐profit status, Planned Parenthood is a business focused on making money," said Gayle Atteberry, Executive Director of Oregon Right to Life. "Tragically, a significant portion of their booming clinic business is ending the lives of unborn babies."

Let's be honest... without our tax dollars, Planned Parenthood would be dead in the water. And while I know some people are disturbed by the opening of these supercenters, and rightfully so, I see them as a last ditch effort of Planned Parenthood to hold their ground. Think of it this way, Planned Parenthood, instead of opening more neighborhood clinics in communities across the nation, have pulled back and built forts! In other words they are assuming a defensive posture. We have to keep up the pressure.
