Thoughts on the Health Care Summit

By Matt Lockett

President Obama is pressing onward with his top domestic priority–Health Care Reform. The question remains: Is funding abortion also one of his top domestic priorities?

Abortion has become a clear wedge issue in the debate right now. The House version has a strong amendment preventing the taxpayer funding of abortion thanks to Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) and his bi-partisan colleagues that stood with him. The Senate's version does not have the same protection. Rep. Stupak recently stated that he currently has 10-12 other Representatives in his corner that believe the abortion-related language in the Senate’s version of the bill is unacceptable. Right now, that's enough to stop any legislation. It is imperative that these men and women of moral conviction maintain their stand against abortion in health care.

The President has announced a televised bi-partisan summit next Thursday, February 25, to discuss how to effectively move forward with a health care bill. However in a conference call to reporters, Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), assistant to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, “The House and Senate have come very close to a final agreement in coordination with the White House. I think the president has a very good idea of what legislation is needed in order for us to move forward.” This begs the question of whether or not next Thurday will truly be a bi-partisan summit or merely a glorified press conference for the President to push his bill. Media channels are reporting today that a possible House/Senate agreement could be announced this weekend just a few days before the summit.

There is no question that health care reform is desperately needed, but it is not an appropriate place for the abortion debate to take place. An increasing majority of Americans are embracing a pro-life stance and polls show that a clear majority of the nation does not want taxpayer-funded abortion. The onus is now on President Obama and majority leaders to listen to what the American public is saying about abortion. What happens next will expose whether they are leading according to the will of the people or pushing a hidden domestic policy agenda that would lead to the greatest expansion of the abortion industry since 1973.

Bottom line–ABORTION IS NOT HEALTHCARE.
