"There Is No Guarantees"

By Ian Kelly

The Daily Caller reports:

Two pro-life House Democrats did not sound optimistic Thursday about the prospects for reaching a compromise on abortion language in the health care bill.

Rep. Bart Stupak, mobbed by reporters on his way into a meeting of House Democrats to examine parts of the bill, was asked if he will require a guarantee that the Senate fix the language if the House passes it.

“There is no guarantees in this town,” Stupak said.

Rep. Daniel Lipinski, the Illinois Democrat who is part of Stupak’s dozen pro-lifers, sounded even less optimistic.

Lipinski said he did not think abortion could be fixed in a reconciliation piece of legislation, which is restricted to budgetary matters. And he said that if there is not a guarantee that the Senate will fix it in a separate bill, he is a firm no.

Months ago Pelosi did not have the votes to pass health care because of the exact same situation she is in now. Thus, in the last possible moment she conceded to pro-life democrats demands.

Acting like she has the votes to pass this legislation now, without the pro-life votes, is a rapidly fading smokescreen.

Bottom line: Ms. Pelosi must hammer out a deal with Bart Stupak and his pro-life coalition or this bill is DOA.

I like how CFP says it:

It didn’t exactly take Nostradamus to predict that some sort of accommodation between Stupak and his pro-life supporters and the Senate would be needed. However, Democrats being Democrats disregarded the necessity of compromise and assumed that they could just steamroll the House on this issue.

It is now becoming clear that the Senate reached too far. If only they had agreed to ban the use of federal funds for abortions, health care reform would be a reality.
