The crowd, which organizers put at more than 12,000, was in a robust mood, after years when it seemed like the abortion issue was too divisive for there to be any hope of progress.

Christina Lamb, 27, of Canadian Nurses for Life in London, Ont., said she'd come to Ottawa to increase awareness and support women making positive choices. She said she was impressed with the recent defeat of the euthanasia bill and the G8 maternal health initiative.

Her sister, Rebekah Lamb, 23, said a recent trip to Poland had convinced her of the similarities in the language used by the Nazis toward the Jews and that used to justify abortion. "I was quite jarred by the similarities -- both try to de-humanize and distance us from the victims," she said.
