In a culture where the rights of humans and animals alike are championed, and people tread as cautiously on their words as they would through a mine field it seems strange that an act as archaic and barbaric as abortion would be legal. If you take a trip over to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) website you’ll see scores of famous faces promoting the welfare of animals. Don’t get me wrong I believe that we should care for the creatures God created. However, how many of those same celebrities would come out in support of unborn children being treated unethically?? Some might say, ‘oh hey c’mon it’s a totally different story’. Well, you’re right- one is an animal and one is a human being.
So why is there a disconnect? Any normal person would agree that if you had a dog that was pregnant and the owner couldn’t afford to care for all the puppies (or shucks, it was just ‘bad timing’) it would still be wrong to kill those puppies. And yet, it’s perfectly acceptable, and even empowering in some circles, to make that “choice” to kill a human as long as that human is still in the womb and is somehow an undue burden.
For too long this widespread injustice in our society has been set up under the auspice of aiding humanity and fueling women’s rights. But when we really break it down abortion is barbaric. For our society to still exist with the notion that it’s okay to snuff out the life of one human for the ease, comfort and choice of another human is terrifying. Does Nazi Germany and Pre-Civil War Slavery America ring any bells??
We live in a society where we fight for forests to be preserved and our natural resources to be protected. We fight for the ethical treatment of animals. We try to make sure all people are treated equally and fairly. We attempt to end world hunger and AIDS. And in that same society, we kill our unborn children in the name of choice. In the words of the great Martin Luther King, Jr., “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” For too long the outdated, unjust practice of abortion has remained in our justice-seeking culture.
