For the past couple of weeks, my mind and heart have been in a perpetual whirlwind about the sudden public exposure of the dark side of abortion about which I have known for a long time. I’ve rehearsed words in response and wondered what I could say that would add to existing comments. By now the nation knows that Dr. Kermit Gosnell cut babies’ spinal cords, bottled their body parts and ran an unregulated, legal abortion clinic in the city of brotherly love. By now, America has seen video after video released from Live Action where Planned Parenthood workers are shown helping undercover “pimps” obtain illegal abortions and aid in sex trafficking in the name of the almighty dollar. In the middle of this we reported on James Pendergraft’s surreptitious late-term abortion facility that is possibly being run illegally in an undisclosed location. Processing all this isn’t shocking from a factual point of view. These unregulated horror stores are not a newsflash to those of us who commit our lives to this mandate from God to stop the shedding of innocent blood, but what does seem shocking is how a nation can watch the events unfold without a national outcry that ought to be a top news story by its very magnitude.
However, whether we cry out or not, God Himself has much to say about public and flagrant sin. Isaiah 47 reminds us that God isn’t going to stand by and watch the trafficking of souls for personal profit, no matter what the culture of the church condones even by omission.
I could offer you a lot of opinion on what’s happening in the news, but what’s really going to matter in the end is what the Lord says. While this passage may be directed at Babylon falling, it would behoove us to recognize we are living in an age where the end times are not a distant idea but a near reality. Isaiah 47 says:
2"Take the millstones and grind meal
Remove your veil, strip off the skirt,
Uncover the leg, cross the rivers.
3"Your nakedness will be uncovered,
Your shame also will be exposed;
I will take vengeance and will not spare a man."
Consider this passage in light of the abortion industry. Even now Planned Parenthood is being exposed. The sickness of doctors doing horrific acts in the name of legal abortion are being exposed. Their nakedness is what’s being uncovered and God will not sit by and allow it. Verse 4 tells us why:
4Our Redeemer, the LORD of hosts is His name,
The Holy One of Israel.
A holy God who redeems souls cannot be who He is and sit by as a nation allows the destruction and sale of people in the name of legal medical practices funded by the government. While Planned Parenthood proclaims its unending dedication to “reproductive health” and even tries to deny the very things we have seen in these videos, God has a response:
7"Yet you said, ‘I will be a queen forever ‘
These things you did not consider
Nor remember the outcome of them.
God can take down the abortion industry in one fell swoop. The abortionists who sit as the queens of women’s health, who insist that they are right, above the wishes of the people, above the truth of life. These self-appointed queens funded by the federal government who insist no one can take away their rule are about to be toppled by the One who makes the rules.
9"But these two things will come on you suddenly in one day:
Loss of children and widowhood
They will come on you in full measure
In spite of your many sorceries,
In spite of the great power of your spells.
10"You felt secure in your wickedness and said,
’No one sees me,’
Your wisdom and your knowledge, they have deluded you;
For you have said in your heart,
’I am, and there is no one besides me.’
11"But evil will come on you
Which you will not know how to charm away;
And disaster will fall on you
For which you cannot atone;
And destruction about which you do not know
Will come on you suddenly.
Has this not been a picture of what we have seen? After 38 years of unrestricted killing, suddenly in a few weeks’ time, graphic exposure of what’s happening behind the doors of these clinics has been revealed to the public. We see them.
Evil begets evil. What they have done is being exposed and consequences will fall because that’s not only the way the kingdom of God is set up, but even our earthly kingdom, with all its flaws, has laws and regulations that have a limit, and most, despite their political and religious views, draw the line at hurting children.
So now that the abortion industry is being exposed on a playing field everyone can see—the consequences to out-of-the-womb children such as Gosnell’s cutting their spinal cords or Planned Parenthood’s many videotapes agreeing to help pimps cover up trafficking teenage girls, even those who might label themselves “pro-choice” are becoming outraged. God’s tone in the next verse is ironic:
12"Stand fast now in your spells
And in your many sorceries
With which you have labored from your youth;
Perhaps you will be able to profit,
Perhaps you may cause trembling.
But the only ones really trembling now are the abortionists who are being exposed for their sin. The end of Isaiah 47 is particularly striking. The NASB says:
15"So have those become to you with whom you have labored,
Who have trafficked with you from your youth;
Each has wandered in his own way;
There is none to save you.
Even God has strong words for those who traffic, and warns them the end is near. What we need to remember in this passages is that they are prophecy; they speak of the coming end of the age. The idea that a loving God will not judge a nation that allows these who disregards His heart and commands to walk without repentance or judgment is to dismiss the character of God.
