  • Why Is Komen Funding Planned Parenthood if They Don’t Do Mammograms? (Video)

Posted by Susan Michelle Tyrrell on March 31, 2011

I used to run in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. It was a fun, classy 5K that sent me running through the rock-lined streets in Tyler, TX many Mother’s Day weekends. And then I found out that the Komen Foundation donates masses of money to Planned Parenthood. Instantly, there was no question that my money would never be associated with the Komen Foundation again. Too many places actually help women with breast cancer without donating money to a place that perpetuates the cause of it. I’ve written about this a few times and the debates have rolled in, both on public comments and from my own friends. The argument was, of course, that Planned Parenthood did some good things. And hey, Komen gives money to them for mammograms and breast cancer screenings, not abortions.

The argument didn’t hold water before. Any money you give to an organization that kills the unborn helps them keep doing that. You can’t designate your donation to only do moral things.

Of course on Wednesday the whole ship sank with the truth about even the alleged good Planned Parenthood does splashed all over every pro-life news outlet and Live Action’s latest video revealed that Planned Parenthood doesn’t even help women with breast cancer. If you missed it, you can watch the video below.

This month Susan G. Komen issued a statement on its website. Click here for a PDF link to its whole statement, which says in part:

Early screening through mammograms and education is critical to end the suffering from this disease: 98 percent of women treated for early stage breast cancer, before it spreads, are alive five years later. The widespread use of mammography and heightened public awareness of breast cancer both contribute to these favorable statistics. And while Komen Affiliates provide funds to pay for screening, education and treatment programs in dozens of communities, in some areas, the only place that poor, uninsured or under-insured women can receive these services are through programs run by Planned Parenthood.

Read Komen’s statement closely “in some areas, the only place…” But Live Action called 30 Planned Parenthood clinics in 27 states and was told in every single call that Planned Parenthood does not do mammograms at all.

I have a file in one of my email accounts where I keep all the letters Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Foundation of America, sends her supporters. Lately there have been a lot of them, usually expressing fear and panic that the government might stop funding them. In fact, Richards says in an email on February 15:

Critical public health programs including Title X provide funding for birth control, cancer screenings, HIV testing, and other lifesaving care for those who can’t otherwise afford it — and all of this funding is in danger. For many women, Planned Parenthood clinics are the only source for these services.

Later, when the House voted to defund them, she sent out a petition asking people to sign and send it to those who voted against Planned Parenthood’s funding. In it she says:

How could you condemn countless women in this country to undiagnosed cancer, unintended pregnancies, and untreated illnesses?

It you believe Richards, and you believe Komen, you believe that Planned Parenthood is helping prevent breast cancer and saving more lives than it takes. In fact, Richards says by removing its funding, the government is condemning women to undiagnosed cancer. But its not true, is it? Planned Parenthood doesn’t do the breast cancer services they claim. And what its doing with the Komen money, once can only imagine. All they do is refer women to breast cancer screenings. Guess what? I can do that too. I can make phone calls and find out who does them and see where the low cost or free services are for women without insurance.

We can’t stress it enough, Planned Parenthood is an abortion clinic. It’s not a diagnostic center. It’s not a cancer screening center. And it most certainly does not, as Richards exceedingly claims, provide “basic health care for women.” Most of what Planned Parenthood does beyond provide abortion is generally services that get coded separately but are part of an abortion.

Once again this organization that gets almost a million dollars a day from our government, from your tax dollars, has shown to be lying and deceitful. From Live Action’s videos exposing the organization as willing to aid and abet in sex trafficking, to lying about mammograms, Planned Parenthood continues to prove it’s not a worthy recipient of taxpayer funds, and now, it seems, even the Komen Foundation needs to review why.
