My friend Tracie Loux, mother of special needs children and adoption consultant extraordinaire knows a bit (volumes) about children with special needs and has taken her skills to a brochure entitled “Teaching Your Children to Show Love and Respect to Individuals with SPECIAL NEEDS.”
Tracie’s labor of love isn’t a list of do’s and don’t’s but a concise piece of advice from one who knows on how to help your child grow up in a culture of life and love.
Half of the challenge is your own response as a parent. If you shield your child’s eyes or cover their mouth, you are reinforcing that what they are observing or hearing is somehow WRONG! If you embrace the moment and use it to teach your child, you will be giving your child an incredible gift.
The fact is, children respond to what they are taught. Kids grow up with prejudice because mom and dad encourage it or the culture they are in allows it. And if that’s true, so is the opposite. Tracie’s colorful brochure provides advice for helping both older children with more ability to understand and younger children as well.
