Rarely do I get excited over the release of a movie. Most of the films I see advertised these days glorify sexual promiscuity, crude humor, or disturbing violence. So when a Christ-centered, pro-family, pro-life film comes out, I am eager to support it. That’s why I went to see Courageous the first weekend it hits the box office.
Courageous is a story about four men who make brave choices to love and fight for their wives and children. They are law-enforcement officers who give their all on their jobs, but struggle to do the same in their homes. The makers of this film desire for it to be used to “turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children” (Malachi 4:5-6). I believe it will provoke and challenge men to embrace the high calling of fatherhood. We need messages like this in our theatres, churches, and homes. With divorce rates skyrocketing and 70% of black children growing up fatherless, it is not a stretch to say we are in a crisis.
Thankfully the call to embrace fatherhood is not just being trumpeted through the big screen, but also in a new billboard campaign. “Fatherhood begins in the womb” are the words written on a billboard that recently went up in Sacramento, California. I recently traveled to Sacramento to join Walter Hoyes, founder and president of the Issues4Life Foundation. Issues4Life partnered with Ryan Bomberger from the Radiance Foundation to create this powerful billboard.
