The band self describes as “Christian metalcore,” but Texas in July must be overcome with heatstroke if we are to believe they can promote Jesus and abortion in the same concert. Life News reports:

Christian rock band, “Texas in July” is playing a benefit tour for sexetc.org, a pro-abortion web site targeting youth. Several popular bands including the Christian rock band Texas in July are playing a benefit tour for the pro-abortion sex education sexetc.org is a so-called ‘sex education’ website providing “sex education for teens by teens.” The site promotes abortion, speaks out against crisis pregnancy centers as well as promoting LGBT support for kids. The site also provides “how to” information for teens to engage in homosexual sex acts.

Being a stick in the mud about music, I’d not heard of the band so I looked them up. At first I thought the initial report was wrong because there wasn’t anything “Christian” about them. I read some lyrics, the band’s site, Wikipedia. I didn’t read every word, but generally if something is promoting itself as Christian, it’s apparent fast enough. But then I went to the band’s Facebook page and sure enough it says “we are a Christian metalcore band.” It was there I saw that Christian kids I know “like” their page, so somewhere Texas in July is reaching Christian kids.

The problem I am having is with Christian and band being ued in the same sentence. How can a self-proclaimed Christian entity be on a tour to promote a flagrantly sexual, non Christian abortion-promoting site?

It can’t.

Jesus says:

"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” (Matthew 6:24)

He doesn’t mean you can’t go out and lay at the altar of the First Federal Bank and sing financial hymns (though that would be included); He means, you can’t be on the same side as God and then do something to promote your own interests that don’t align with God and call yourself a Christian.

Texas in July has two choices—it can pull out of a tour promoting blatantly non-Christian endeavors or it can pull out of promoting itself as a Christian band.

Of course it can stick with choice 3, which is what it is now, but that’s the most tragic choice of all. I know Christian kids who like metalcore music who believe groups like this are good examples for them. It’s possible to sing music that doesn’t say Jesus and still promote truth and good values, dependent on the source. But it’s not possible to be for Jesus and against Him all at once. The divided interests of this group actually seem to be reflected in lyrics of a song on its latest album:

We’re so lost,
I think we need help,
left behind all that we stood for,
this is our one sole reality,
this is our one sole reality,
what path do we choose,
what path do we choose.

(From “One Reality” by Texas in July

However, on the same CD is a song that actually quotes scripture and seems to be a prayer for the Lord to guide them. And, most ironically of all, come the lyrics from "Dying World" which could almost seem like a pro-life song as it proclaims, "Termination of sinless victims,/ freedom is abused by man/ how many times must we tell ourselves,/to stand for what we created." That’s the question? How many times must we tell ourselves to stand?

While some lyrics might look nice as mom and dad are scoping out the CD to make sure it’s not “bad,” the truth is never only in what we say, it’s in what we do. Texas in July is promoting abortion. Period. Is our entertainment ever worth aligning ourselves with darkness?
